Week 14: Gearing up for the Holidays!

This week was another busy one, but in a different way! I started the week by packing up the book fair from the previous week. The were planning to come pick it up Tuesday morning, but they were able to come by Monday afternoon! I was so glad I went ahead and packed it all up first thing Monday morning. The book fair is fun, but I was ready to get my space organized again. I also was able to put up some books that started to pile up that needed to be shelved! Tuesday I was summoned to my first ever jury duty! So, I wasn't at school this day. It was not very exciting as I was never called back. I was able to sit quietly and read my book though!  We have a huge Thanksgiving lunch for our students and community members on Thursday, so we prepared for that. Parents, grandparents, and other family members come to enjoy lunch with their child. It is a fun day and an exciting way to get ready for all of the holiday activities. We use the library as a holding space for parents and fa...

Week 13: Scholastic Book Fair!

This week was a big week! We had the Scholastic book fair. I love book fair week so much, and so do the kids! We run the book fair all week. Previous to starting the book fair I create a booking link through my Google Calendar (we are a Google Education Suite school) and teachers are able to easily sign up for a time slot that works best for them to bring their class in. This is a much more organized way of bringing classes in rather than just allowing students to shop whenever they want. I also reach out to the community via email and our social media page to ask for parent volunteers. I was able to have a parent volunteer each day of book fair week. They help the students shop, count their money, and just help manage all of the people in the library while I run the cash register. Our community is always willing to come help out with events at the school.  I did also still allow students to come in to return and check out books, so having extra hands in the library helped wi...

Week 12: F2f Reading Lesson & High school Library Visit

This week I spent some time in the high school media center. It was so fun to see how the library at a high school is so different than an elementary school library. One thing that I noticed is that book check in and out does not occur nearly as often. Students do utilize the space though. There were several students that are completing college courses working in the library. It is nice for them to have a quiet space to work on their online classes.  I helped the media specialist trouble shoot a video recording issue for a teacher. I also helped the media specialist take some pictures of a math lesson that a teacher requested.  At this particular high school there is a Pre-K class. The Pre-K class comes in to the library weekly for a read aloud and a craft. The Media Specialist let me read to them, and this was right up ally! It was so fun, and the kids were excited to have a guest reader.  I also taught my face to face reading lesson this week. I collaborated with ...

Week 11: Halloween Week AND Red Ribbon Week!

Whew! This week has been very busy! Not only was it Halloween week in an elementary school, we also participated in dress up days for Red Ribbon Week. It was truly so much fun, but very busy!  The week began with an AI Coaching session that I am participating in through a county wide initiative. I am part of a cohort of teachers and leaders in our county that will ultimately be teaching and coaching teachers on the use of generative AI in schools. I am very excited about this, because I have really loved learning about AI.  I was also able to complete two of my librarian interviews this week through a zoom video call. I thought it was especially interesting hearing from a high school media specialist because her work day is so drastically different than mine. Her focus is definitely more so on teaching technology skills and research skills for students.  I also spent 4 hours at a middle school library this week. I helped the media specialist create a picture wall fo...

Week 7- Week 10: Combining weeks due to school closures!

Week 7: School closures due to Hurricane Helene  Week 8: This week was not as busy as I expected after coming back from being out all week. I did need to catch up on the Georgia Literacy Modules that are required from our county. I worked on that for a couple hours this week. I had several whole classes come in for book check out, but a lot of my teachers that had originally scheduled a read aloud and activity with me asked to cancel or reschedule because they had to catch up on work from last week. This is totally understandable, and I enjoy being able to be flexible with teachers and just trying to meet them where they are at in order to support them.  Week 9: Fall Break- School Closed all week Week 10: This week was fun! I had several read alouds that were rescheduled from the previous weeks. We read "Creepy Pair of Underwear" and did a sequence of events activity. The kids loved the story and really did a great job working on the activity.  Another really exciti...

Cataloging New Books

When I order books from Titlewave or Scholastic, I typically pay the extra money for them to do the processing. This is so much easier and a HUGE time saver! They apply the labels and send me the MARC records to import and VOILA, the books are entered and ready to be checked out the same day! The only thing I really have to do is add the appropriate "color dot" to the spine. We use colored dots to organize books by lexile/AR levels. This helps students to find books that are appropriate for their reading level. However, this varies from school to school, so I have to make sure the correct color dot is applied. This is a very simple task though! Below is an image of the conversion chart that we use in my library:  I do have some books that are donated to the library or sometimes parents will replace damaged books (which I am so appreciative of!) so I do have some to catalog. I received some donations for cataloging this year! It was fairly simple to add the title, but the most...
