Week 1: August 19th-23rd Scheduling and Planning

This week at in the library at Stilson Elementary I focused mostly on library orientation for students and on scheduling library visits for my practicum course. In order to sign teachers up for library orientation, I created a Google Booking link on my google calendar. This was a new thing that figured out I could do! I just create the booking link, and send it out to teachers. I can edit the days and times, and if I have something on the calendar for that day it will not allow anyone to double book. I thought this was such an efficient way to have teachers sign up.

Teachers signed up their individual classes for orientation. During orientation I introduced myself to the students and we went over a few library expectations. I focused on how to behave while in the library: no running, not rolling around in the chairs, putting books in appropriate locations. I also focused on how to take care of books: no food or drink, don't tear the pages, keep away from pets and small siblings.

I then read a book to the class. This year I chose the book "Do Not Bring Your Dragon to the Library." They loved it!

Then after the short presentation and read aloud, I took one table at a time (about 4 students) to help them check out books. This was particularly necessary for 1st graders. I showed them where their library card was and how to scan their card and books. While the other tables were waiting to check out books they worked on an activity. Some grades completed a little coloring booklet about library rules/book care, and some grades completed a coloring sheet based off the book I read during the story time.

Library orientation week was very busy. I had every grade (Prek-5th) come to the library this week. This was my main focus for the week. In between orientations I did work on scheduling times to meet with an elementary school librarian, middle school librarian, and high school librarian. I got those scheduled and I am looking forward to learning from each one!

Week 3: September Read Aloud

This week I started my September Read Alouds! I sent out the attached newsletter to all teachers in my school along with a Google Calendar booking link. The classes really enjoyed the book "How I Became a Pirate". I used the Novel Effect App again, and the sounds with this particular book were so fun.  With the read aloud students created a treasure map, colored a parrot, or matched the sequence of events of the story.  I also had two technology lessons that I taught this week for 4th grade. I focused on being safe online and how to create a slideshow using Google Slides.

Week 7- Week 10: Combining weeks due to school closures!

Week 7: School closures due to Hurricane Helene  Week 8: This week was not as busy as I expected after coming back from being out all week. I did need to catch up on the Georgia Literacy Modules that are required from our county. I worked on that for a couple hours this week. I had several whole classes come in for book check out, but a lot of my teachers that had originally scheduled a read aloud and activity with me asked to cancel or reschedule because they had to catch up on work from last week. This is totally understandable, and I enjoy being able to be flexible with teachers and just trying to meet them where they are at in order to support them.  Week 9: Fall Break- School Closed all week Week 10: This week was fun! I had several read alouds that were rescheduled from the previous weeks. We read "Creepy Pair of Underwear" and did a sequence of events activity. The kids loved the story and really did a great job working on the activity.  Another really exciti...
